Frames of Preference: 2001: A Space Odyssey

2001 A Space OdysseyIt felt appropriate to choose this frame from 2001 over any of the numerous, gorgeously-crafted space scenes later in the film. More an emotional journey than a narrative, it’s a film that most viewers will simply not grasp on their first viewing. It starts with this scene, where a group of primates find the famous monolith in their ancient lands, and it inspires them to use each other’s bones as weapons. Although the film leaps off the deep end when its characters start speaking symbolically and dialogue is completely dropped for breathtaking visuals, this scene is a simple enough metaphor for the entire film’s theme of technology and advancement.
