Frames of Preference: Out of This World

Out of this WorldEric Chahi’s rotoscoped adventure game Out of This World (also known as Another World outside of America)  told a better story than most big-budget games today, all without any dialogue. You follow the story of Lester, a scientist who gets transported to a foreign land where strange aliens rule the planet, and he is quickly imprisoned underground with a friendly alien who helps him escape. As the two make their way out of the prison and travel across this strange landscape, the player has to duck, shoot, and kick their way out of danger. The game’s beautiful art style allowed for multiple layers of background, as shown here in one of the first scenes of the game. The hulking beast near the horizon foreshadows an upcoming sequence, and its moments like this that make this strange world feel full of detail and wonder.
